Edna Spencer discusses her experiences as a student and as a young teacher in rural Buena Vista County schools; traveling by train to visit her grandmother in Chicago and a trip to west to California, Oregon, Washington and Glacier National Park with her sister; and her courtship and marriage to Ross Spencer. Of particular interest is her description of being a member of the first girls basketball team in her home town of Alta, Iowa.
